I believe it is possible to be heterosexual and yet perform (as it were) in a homosexual environment or situation. I offer as example a prison population. I'd bet most of the convicts would not consider themselves to be gay and would probably object strenuously if confronted, but when it's the only game in town...
I do not know why, but I also believe it is easier and (socially) more acceptable for women to have a same sex relationship than it is for men.
Humans are the most adaptable non-insectoid creatures on the planet. It makes sense that we would be able to shift sexual orientation as required or desired. Maybe we need another category. In addition to heterosexual, homosexual and bisexual, I suggest omnisexual. One of our most basic drives is that of reproduction. Given that, it would seem that homosexuality would run counter to that basic drive and might be considered deviant from the societal norms. However, we humans also seem to have a very strong need for companionship. Couple that with the fact that sex is enjoyable and fun and a natural way to both reproduce and/or meet the need for companionship and you have a creature ready for just about anything.
I'm a father (one boy almost four and one as-yet-unknown on the way) and I find I have this concern also. What do I do if my child is gay? What CAN I do? Should it even be a concern? It's an emotional issue as well as a practical one.
I don't have answers: only more questions and what I hope is an open mind.
I deal with it by knowing that whatever happens and whatever my children may become or decide as far as sexual orientation is concerned, I will do my best to educate them (hopefully without too much preaching and prejudice) and live as an example to them. And that is really all I can do. They will find their way in spite of all that.
I will always love my children. I'm sure you feel the same way.
